Ngamba island chimpanzee sanctuary
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary is part of the Koome group of island located on Lake Victoria, 23Km South of Entebbe, Uganda. It consists of approximately 100 acres, 98 of which are forested and for use by the chimpanzee. Ngamba island was officially opened to visitors in October 1999 and is currently home to 42 orphaned chimpanzees, 22 of which have been confiscated and brought to the island since its opening. Ngamba Island is a project of chimpanzee sanctuary and wildlife conservation trust (CSWCT), who provide these orphaned chimpanzee with secure home to live out their lives, since a return to their natural habitant is not currently possible. The sanctuary aims to educate visitors and local communities about this remarkable species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat. The sanctuary has both Day trips and overnight trips for chimpanzee integration and caregiver experiences; For the integration programme, you will join the chimpanzee as they are introduced to the facilities, other chimpanzees and forest environment after arrival at the sanctuary, you will become part of the introduction team going into the enclosure (or forest) with several of the young chimpanzees who are used to human contact. Here you will be given the opportunity to help support them by holding them, experience them play-biting , climbing on you, pulling your hair or just holding your hand whilst you enjoy this unique one-hour activity limited four persons at a time. The care-giver experience is 24 hour opportunity to be behind these scenes of sanctuary and participate in the daily routine preparing food, cleaning facilities, health checks and generally learning more about the efforts needed to take care of the chimpanzees. The caregiver and integration activities may only be included as part of the overnight excursion to Ngamba Island and they require advance booking and specific vaccination and health requirements that need to be fulfilled well in advance.
